30s: Me, Chrystal Price

Data Analyst, Style Consultant, and Makeup Sales Consultant; age 32.

A native of Saginaw, Michigan, her routine, style, and regimen is one of “Cheap and Cheerful.”

DIET ”My parents are from the deep south (Louisana and Mississippi) so I grew up with a mostly traditional southern diet with Creole and Cajun influences.  My parents grew much of our food growing up, so we ate plenty of vegetables.  Now my diet consists of mostly chicken and fish, but with an abundance of vegetables (many from my own garden), whole grains, and olive oil.  I eat a much more Mediterranean-inspired diet.”

BREAKFAST: In the winter:  Oatmeal with slivered almonds and berries.   In the summer, flax and soy toast with butter and lemon curd, flax and soy toast with nut butter and raspberries, or egg on an whole grain english muffin.

LUNCH: Depends.  Usually the previous night’s leftovers. “Often, it’s a protein with roasted/sauteed vegetables.”

DINNER: “Roasted chicken/fish/pork, root vegetables, cabbage, and brown rice are often on the menu.  We eat a lot of vegetables.   Food is paramount in our home and we believe in butter, olive oil, and garlic.  I don’t sacrifice good tasting food. We indulge in eating out periodically.”

BEVERAGES: “Coffee, copious amounts of tea, fruit I’ve juiced (ginger in anything is delicious), sparkling water, and definitely wine.  Preferably a good dry rosé.”

SNACKS: “I don’t snack much, but if I do, I like dark chocolate with chili peppers, tea biscuits, and tortilla chips with hummus. A sugar cookie is a guilty indulgence.”

VITAMINS: “I admittedly and unapologetically take gummy vitamins from Trader Joe’s daily, and I juice fruit and vegetables that are going a bit soft.  This morning I had carrot-ginger-apple-kiwi-peach-mango juice and it was delicious.”

FITNESS ”I’m not as dedicated to exercise as I should be - I admittedly loathe working out.  However, I enjoy dancing whilst cleaning and riding my bike at night.”

SKIN CARE ”My secret for great skin is to mostly leave it alone and drink lots of water.  I wash daily and nightly with Mark.’s That’s Deep Purifying Gel Cleanser ($9), use an Apricot Scrub weekly ($3), and use Mark’s Get a Tint SPF 15 Tinted Moisturizer ($12). If I’ve got a long day ahead of me where I need my makeup to last, I’ll use a primer like Mark.’s Primed for Perfection Face Primer ($10).

MAKEUP ”I’m all about the Five Minute Face.  If I can’t slap it on in five minutes and look good, I’m probably not doing it.  I rarely wear foundation, just the tinted moisturizer, but I do have a favourite pair of go-to eyeshadows: MAC’s Honeylust and MAC’s Tempting (both $15).    A peachy/rose gold brown and a brown are great choices for everyday glamour - if you mess them up, no one can tell.  If I wear eyeliner, which I rarely do, it’s MAC’s Teddy, in a soft, sparkly brown.  I’m a recent convert to blush, after my makeup artist Roger Hoover told me I couldn’t leave home without it, so I use a Mark.’s Good Glowing Mosaic Blush in Chica ($8) and usually top off with a neutral lipgloss or Kat Von D’s Everlasting Love lipstick in Outlaw ($19) for an indelible red pucker.  No face is complete without banging lashes, so mascara is a must for my super curly ones - I love Mark.’s Scanda-Lash hook-up mascara ($6.50) - I used to wear Lancome and Diorshow, but this one blows both out of the water.  I get a proper manicure about once a month, and at least two proper pedicures a year (the rest is home maintenance), but I change my nail polish weekly.  Right now I am loving sorbet coloured shades like tangerine and raspberry.

HAIR ”I have ridiculously curly hair that I wash about once a week with a heavy creamy conditioner, like Fekkai’s Moisture Mask.  I shampoo about once every two weeks - shampoo is harsh and strips the oil from my hair.  I colour at home mostly with Dark and Lovely haircolour in honey blonde ($6) and moisturize with a combination of lavender and eucalyptus infused whipped shea butter and coconut oil from the The Wondrous Wild. ($15) To style, often I do flat twists or braids, or apply Kinky Curly styling custard and rake through my curls to dry.  I don’t have a regular stylist, so most care is done at home.

BODY ”I don’t get a massage often enough, but when I do, I see my long time friend and massage therapist Callie Ackles for a deep tissue massage.  I moisturize daily with the Wondrous Wild coconut oil and shea whipped body butter.  I shower more than I soak, but I do exfoliate my feet weekly with a file and H2O+ foot scrub ($16).  To finish, I wear Mark.’s Sassy for an everyday scent, and either Night Iris ($24) or Dolce and Gabbana’s Sicily for a beautiful evening fragrance (although I am wearing Dior’s J’Adore today.)”

I’ve been doing some research for another project I’ve been working on, and came across a few blog posts on what men want (sexually attractive beings) and why women are smart to give it to them.  This felt very one-sided and puts women in the situation of whoring themselves for a man’s affections.  I struggle with ‘the way things are/the way things should be’ and gross generalizations.  The blog was attempting to deal with “The Rules”, more or less and that women should be physically attractive and feminine to attract men.  I get that, and for the most part agree - probably more for reasons more complicated than what some people think.

Men are visual creatures, there’s no denying that.  I’m very well aware of the Biology of Beauty and believe in it.  Men want healthy looking women - attraction to them is how reproduction works.  Just as you don’t want the soggy cucumbers in the produce section, they don’t want soggy women. OK.  Got it.  Been preached that more than enough.

I’d like to think that they are slightly more evolved than their neanderthal forefathers and look for more than just physical characteristics in women.  I’d like to think that looking good gets your foot in the door on date one, but personality and your contributions to the relationship keep you in.  On the contrary, I also believe that you aren’t allowed to let yourself go once you’ve secured a relationship, but “not letting yourself go” should have a hell of a lot less to do with whether you think your partner should leave (how insecure, and newsflash, if he wants to leave, he will leave, regardless of what you do).  Not letting yourself go has far more to do with looking good to make yourself feel good.  When you feel good, you project that into your interactions with others.  Case closed - and my entire philosophy to style consulting.

I’m a proponent for femininity and fabulousness.  I think injecting small doses of celebrity in your own life: your own signature perfume, dressing for your body type and splurging on a key item, etc. serves to celebrate oneself.  Celebrating yourself in the mirror and saying “hey, I’m desirable.  I look good!” is an instant ego boost, and it shows.

I admittedly put on high heels and makeup on for my fiancé.  I’m excited to look good and be a bit more soft for him - he’s very special to me and yes, I seek his approval of my physical self, but guess what?  He does the same for me.  It’s reciprocal.

With that said, treat yourself. Dolling up a little just for you goes a long way.

Currently loving:  Jmarie Moroccan Hair Gloss.  I picked this up at a natural hair meetup this weekend because I simply couldn’t resist the price: $10 for 2oz of argan oil.

Now, I was slow to jump on the argan oil bandwagon although its praises have been touted in many a fashion magazine for at least a year.  I wasn’t willing to spend the requisite $40 on MoroccanOil to end up tossing yet another fad in the back of my beauty closet.

Except this isn’t quite a fad.  Argan oil is endemic to Morocco, where it is harvested by women’s cooperatives.  This oil absorbs quickly into your skin and hair (yes you can use it for both), leaving it supple and smooth with a sheen - not the oily shine that you may get with other oils.  I’ve been mixing it with my lotions for a boost in moisturization to combat Chicago winter and have been adding drops of it to shea butter to use in my hair.    Get yours while you can for $9.99.  You can’t beat it for the price.
